Chart of the Day: Third Quarter Smartphone ownership stats show near total adoption among under fifties

A whopping 97% of under 45s in the US own a Smartphone. That's just about as high a rate of adoption as it's possible to get. The adoption rate is now as high as it is for fridges! A technology that's almost 100 years old Vs a technology that only really became widespread after 2008. It's also interesting that Smartphone adoption is by no means restricted to the young and middle ages. Even the over 65s have a fairly high adoption rate of 68%. If current trends continue we can expect adoption rates of 80% or higher among the over 65s within just a couple of years. Customers of all ages are now using mobile devices to search for products, browse and consume content. The people are mobile first. You should be too.

A Smorgasbord of cutting-edge e-commerce stats to benchmark your business against

'It is the mark of a truly intelligent person to be moved by statistics' - George Bernard Shaw. I don't think these statistics can lay any claim on being moving. So take a look that these 37 crucial Ecommerce stats structured around all customer lifecycle touchpoints using our…

Chart of the Day: Ecommerce becomes the preferred method for Christmas Shopping among UK consumers for the first time ever.

Ecommerce has notched up double-digit sales growth every year for over a decade now. In certain markets, like white goods or electricals it really dominates, where as in others, like FMCG it's miles behind bricks and mortar stores. It's the time of the year where consumers are thinking about where to buy their Christmas prezzies and marketers are thinking about putting their lovingly developed Christmas marketing plans into action. This year we've got some seriously good news for ecommerce marketers. Bobatoo surveyed over 2000 UK consumers and found that almost two-thirds plan to conduct the majority of their shopping online this year. This is a huge jump on the 2015 figure, when the majority of consumers said they would be conducting most of their shopping in physical stores. If the figures are to be believed,…

How data, technology and changing consumer expectations are shaping the marketing mix

The advancement of so many transformative new technologies over the last five to ten years is shaking up the modern marketing world. From the emergence of wearable technology, to chatbots and mobile payment apps, disruption is taking place nearly everywhere we look. All of these technologies have the potential to give marketers new opportunities to meet and surpass consumer expectations. However, this is only possible if marketers can keep their skill-sets up to date and look at ways to integrate new ways of working into existing processes, for example through an effective digital transformation agenda. The technological advancement we’re seeing is not linear. Instead, it is occurring rapidly in the form of major leaps, with consumers and pioneering tech companies leading the change: Many businesses are struggling to keep up and it’s…

Chart of the Day: South Korea, Singapore and the Netherlands lead the world in Digital Adoption

This is a first for us - a non-digital chart of the day! It comes (courtesy of a scanner) from the brand spanking new 2017 edition of The Economist's World in Figures, and has not yet been released digitally. Which is somewhat ironic, given it's subject! The Economist measured the adoption of digital technologies across business, government and among consumers. It found South Korea, Singapore and the Netherlands were leading the world when it comes to the adoption of digital technologies. It's interesting how global this list is. Rather than being concentrated entirely in Europe and North America, this list features countries from North East Asia, South East Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe, as well as the more expected Western Europe and America. The digital revolution is creating a more connected world - one…

The growing deluge of content means you'll need a plan to cut through the noise in 2017

In digital marketing, you've probably come across the statement "content is king" several times. Make no mistake that content is the lifeblood of every essential online marketing activity. Be it social media marketing, email marketing, SEO, or paid advertising - none of these departments will succeed without the development of quality content. A study by Demand Metric reveals that 78% of CMOs believe that custom content is the future of digital marketing. However, successful content marketing is an intricate process that requires a lot of research and planning. Below are the crucial steps you need to prepare your content marketing strategy for 2017:

1. Specify Your Business Objectives

In every business endeavor, you need to set specific goals and objectives that will guide your day-to-day activities and ensure you're right on track. First off, make sure you…

Trump defied every expert and still won. The implications for brands are huge.

Yesterday, I prepared a piece about the anticipated Clinton win as President of America. What a difference nine hours makes… Despite all the sophisticated big data … the huge political advertising budgets from the Clinton camp… the faceless pollsters who number-crunched rather than listened to the unspoken authentic voice of the people… in the end Trump won. …So why, from a branding perspective did a reported sexist, racist and narcissistic defy all predictions? Perhaps the regular American saw what a mess the world has become – despite all the propaganda suggesting the contrary. Looking for example to the UK, they got the impression that its identity had been decimated by an open-door policy leading to the country’s spiritual, commercial, social and political foundations becoming at best ‘in transition’ and at worst, tatters. They saw Europe down, despondent and divided. They looked at how former hard-working…

Video already makes up 70% of global internet traffic, but this is set to increase still further.

To state the obvious, video is already an extremely popular content medium.  But far from plateauing, online video it set to continue its rapid growth. By 2020 it's set to reach an overwhelming 80% share of all global internet traffic. This trend is propelled by two key factors. Firstly there is the growing popularity of on-demand video. Then there is the increasing popularity of video-based social media. This doesn't just mean YouTube. Facebook's push of live video as well as uploaded video, and Snapchat's and Instagram popularity (both of which now involve video) mean increasing views of video content from social platforms. Marketers need to take advantage these trends, and utilise video- whether for marketing or advertising. Exploiting the incredible prominence Facebook is currently giving live video at the moment looks like a promising tactic at the moment…
