LinkedIn closes two key services

LinkedIn Answers and Events are no more, giving new impetus to Quora?

Importance:

A couple of relatively small changes in LinkedIn to be aware of if you use LinkedIn as a B2B marketer or for professional development. The two closures which were not announced by the blog since not positive news, but hidden away in the Help Centre are:

  • LinkedIn Answersthis closes at the end of January 2013. I personally haven’t used it so much recently and wonder whether the better categorisation, filtering and rating in Quora have been the death-knell. A reminder to take a look again at Quora – which has high levels of activity in some areas, for example SEO.

To help Answer Digital Marketing Questions try the Smart Insights Answers forum and Smart Insights LinkedIn Group where we have Q&A across the full range of digital activities.

  • Linked In Eventsthis actually closed back in November. This was still used quite actively by attendees and was a good way for organisers to flag event and people to arrange to network, but LinkedIn now sees it as less important relative to company pages. That’s the takeaway here for event organisers – to try to build up interest in people following your company.

I’ve always been a big advocate of LinkedIn Answers, I always saw it as a useful too for businesses and professionals to display their expertise.

See my blog on using LinekdIn for the legal sector…

Thanks Tom – Yes I’m sure this 31/01 will be a black letter day for many who used it for lead generation in niches.

I don’t really understand why they have retired it – they surely could have used it to support ad revenue and I don’t think it detracted from other parts of the service.
